Luke, the teacher

This weekend I've been intentional to sit with Luke and watch/ponder some of the things that he's taught me since he was born. As I looked over the list I came up with this morning, I found some very significant learnings that I thought I would share. This is not an exhaustive list (as I know as soon as I hit "publish post" a couple other learnings will come to mind) nor is this the end of the learnings by any stretch of the imagination. But it's a small picture into what's being going on for me as I've watched our little guy grow. Here goes!

What my son has taught/reminded me in 10 weeks:
- Divinity resides in you regardless of what you’ve done or what you believe (because really, he hasn’t done much and I have no idea what he believes in – besides breast milk, diapers, and sleep).
- A smile can change how everyone feels in an instant.
- Adults have a need to be efficient…and babies have a way of slowing us down. Being present to Luke is more important then getting the dishes done, keeping the house clean, or finishing the day’s project.
- Communicating what you want/need in the moment isn’t the worst thing in the world.
- Boundaries are a necessary part of life. They help you find rhythm.
- Everybody has the same starting point – so there’s some level of union between us all (related to the first point).
- We all chart our own path of growth and development – both as babies & parents. We’re all trying our best with what we’ve been given.
- Having others help you with your needs is a part of the natural ebb & flow of life.
- My life is not – primarily – about me.
- Bodily functions such as burping & farting are appropriate in all situations. The louder they are, the greater the response from those around you.

Cheers to you Luke!
